We've been busy, busy, busy!

Oh boy, have we been busy!  Ask your little angel about The Daily 5.  We have been working so hard to build our stamina as we do Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading.  We are doing such a great job at working quietly and independently, as we become better readers and writers!

We are learning so many things in math!  Our Calendar Buddy (Thank you Cara Carroll of First Grade Parade!) is helping us get so good at lots of different math skills like; place value, odd & even, tallies, telling time to the hour, coins, patterns, etc.  We are learning how to make addition sentences with addends and a sum (parts & a whole)!  We know the definition of words like plus, addition, equal, solve, and congruent!

So far in language arts, we’ve learned about naming words (nouns), action words (verbs), and describing words (adjectives)!  We know what you need to make a sentence and we’ve been editing them to “fix” the stuff that isn’t right.

Please read every night with your sweet first grader and help them practice their spelling words, popcorn words (sight words), and math skills like skip-counting by 5’s and 10’s, recognizing coins, knowing their value, and telling time to the hour.

I’m absolutely lovin’ this beautiful Fall weather! It’s such a nice change from the super hot summer we just had.  It really gets me excited about all things fall (especially APPLES!).  And in honor of John Chapman (AKA Johnny Appleseed’s) birthday today, we kicked off apple week by reading a story about his life.

Wow! There’s so much to learn and to do in first grade, and believe mewe’re just getting started!  I’ll be posting pictures from our Rainbow Day and Teddy Bear Day very soon.

Happy Fall Ya’ll!

Mrs. Gregory
